                                                        Burke Malin - Head Coach

                                                        Phone: (415) 225-6733
Coach Burke Malin has participated in both Hockey Canada’s and USA Hockey’s coaching programs.  Burke is his 2nd year as a coach in the San Francisco Mite program and his 4th year assisting in the hockey program overall.  Burke grew up playing hockey in Edmonton, Canada (the land of Gretzky and Messier) and progressed to play Junior B hockey in St.Albert, Alberta.  He has played competitive hockey on an organized team each year for the past 38 years – whether it was men’s league, faculty hockey at the University of Alberta and University of Toronto, or now men’s league in the Bay Area.  Burke’s enjoys spending time with his wife Kathy when not at the rink and with his son Matthew, who plays in the San Francisco hockey program.

Burke has enjoyed being a part of introducing the USA Hockey ADM model to the Mite program in San Francisco with many other committed coaches and parents over the past few years.  He finds the San Francisco hockey experience extremely rewarding when considering the ability to play hockey and go to the beach… all on the same day… in the middle of “winter”.

                                                        Shane Holland - Mite Assistant

Shane began skating in Alaska when he was 10 years old.  He played CHA division 2 college hockey at Georgia State University and has played rec league hockey obsessively for the past 18 years.  Shane has two young sons, Max and Ian, who are both in the San Francisco hockey program. He is certified as a USA Hockey Level 2 Coach and loves teaching kids about the great sport of hockey.

                                                        Zach McCoy - Mite Assistant

Coach Zach hales from the great state of Indiana (well known for corn, John Cougar and the Boilermakers) where he started to skate at the age of three. He continued on to play youth hockey with the AA Irish Rovers from Mites to Bantams before moving on to play High School hockey at St. Joseph’s while also playing on Team Michiana, the regional All- Star team.  His summers during those years consisted of his other love (baseball) and hockey camps at Miami of Ohio and Elite Camps in Nelson, BC (eh!). Zach opted against offers to play Junior hockey and attended Purdue University where he was a Center on the Club Team (funny enough because the last time he was a forward was when he was a squirt)!  Hockey and Zach took a leave of absence for his first few years in “the real world” but after sustaining a heel bone fracture in a bouldering fall last year he decided to give back to the sport that taught him so much; not just about a sport but about life in general. This is his first year with the Coaches whistle and is looking forward to a killer year with a great group of players.   Zach enjoys anything outdoors, more specifically living in the backcountry whenever possible, going for long bike rides and exploring this great city.

                                                        Paul Switenki - Mite Supervisor

                                                        Picture
Coach Paul Switenki has USA Hockey Level 4 Coaching credentials and has been coaching youth since 1990, this 2009-2010 season marks his 11th with the Sabercats.  He grew up playing on the frozen lakes and outdoor rinks of his native Minnesota, and often attended Herb Brooks summer camps.  After his youth travel and high school hockey years, he attended Penn State University, where he played intramurals, practiced with the National Champion PSU Division I Club team and coached learn-to-skate, in-house and travel hockey.  He continued his coaching while attending the University of Colorado and while studying and working in the UK.  He has coached every level from Mites to Midgets...including a women's team in London, England. Although his favorite movie is "Miracle", he says it can't compare with the live version he saw as an inspired 9 year old. In his spare time Coach Paul likes to spend time with his wife Birgit and son Andre.

Coach Jason grew up in Calgary, Alberta and began skating almost as soon as he could walk.  By age 4 he was out on the ice with a stick chasing the puck around.  As a Native Canadian Coach Jason had hockey running through his blood and was surrounded by Flames chants everywhere he looked.  At age 17 Coach Jason was playing hockey at the ‘AAA’ level and his team was one win away from going to the National Championship.  After graduating high school Jason decided to give back to the game he loved so much by coaching youth hockey.  Coach Jason coached two spring ‘AAA’ Pee Wee teams and has also designed and facilitated 3 years of hockey school camps.  In 2007 Jason moved to San Francisco and first started coaching the Sabercats Squirt A team in 2008 and the Pee Wee team in 2009.  This year is his third year with the organization and looks forward to several more to come.

                                                        Peter Korcsinszky - Head Coach

                                                        Phone:  (415) 994.5727
Coach Peter Korcsinszky's love for ice hockey originates from his father, who is a true fanatic of the sport.  Growing up watching his father, who has been an active member of the Hungarian Ice Hockey Federation and the President of the local hockey club over the past 20 years, left no chance for him to avoid his fate: becoming a hockey player. He got his first pair of skates at the age of 5 and since then has never abandoned them.  He played youth travel hockey up to his teenage years and was also selected for the Under-16 National Team of Hungary.  Shortly after, due to a knee injury, he decided to focus on his education, ultimately earning a law degree. Throughout he stayed close to the sport, as he started coaching his hometown’s Squirt and PeeWee teams and was running the International Ice Hockey Federation's “Learn to Play” program.  In 2004, after getting married and joining his wife here in San Francisco, he instantly got connected with the local hockey world.   Since then he has been serving as a coach and skating instructor for the Sabercats In-House/Squirt and PeeWee program at YBISC. It’s been over a decade since he started teaching youngsters the fundamentals of ice hockey, incorporating solid work ethics and uncompromised team spirit.  He also plays for the San Francisco Adult Hockey League, and has since never forgotten the ultimate reason he first stepped on the ice:
                                                                                                      Hockey is FUN!

                                                        Charles Hixon - PW Assistant
Started playing hockey when he was 8 at an in house league in Culver City, Los Angeles.
At the age of 12 he joined his first club in Burbank called the Golden Bears.  At 14 he stopped playing club bantam AA and joined the high school varsity league for Venice High School.  Upon graduating from high school he remained involved with the Venice High School hockey program as an assistant coach for 2 years.  He is very excited to continue his coaching career with SF Sabercats.

                                                        Picture

Coach Vince is a Bay Area native and an alumnus of the San Francisco Sabercats Hockey Club. He began his hockey career on roller blades at the age of 10 and then started his first year of ice hockey as a Bantam for the Sabercats. From there, Vinny played with two other Bay Area teams including the Oakland Bears for three years and the Vacaville Northstars for his final year of youth hockey. Vince’s love of the game and desire to excel in the sport didn’t end there as he traveled up north to British Columbia to play Junior hockey. He returned from a year of Juniors to continue school which is also when he started coaching in the San Francisco hockey community.  First for their High School Summer Team and then with the Sabercats PeeWee program along side head Coach Peter and Coach Jason. This year will be Coach Vince’s second season coaching the PeeWee team and he is very excited to transfer his knowledge and love of the game to the up and coming players of the Sabercats.
