Coach Harly grew up playing youth hockey in Soldotna, Alaska, for the Kenai Penninsula Icehawks, all the way through midget. He also played high school hockey for the SOHI (Soldotna High) Stars. There he played for renowned Alaskan high school hockey coach, Pat Nolden. He lettered all four years and was twice the recipient of the Coach’s Award, given for coach-ability and leadership. Injuries kept him from pursuing hockey further, but he did stay close to the game. Harly started coaching at Denver University’s Junior Pioneer youth hockey program in 2007, where he was an assistant coach for the bantam B team, and helped with many of the program’s other teams and clinics.
